Such is the schedule required of me as I re-enter the real world. (As one friend put it, "Hey, hippie, get a job." So the networking begins.
This schedule, while not stressful in the traditional sense, has its moments of tension and insecurity. Handwritten thank you notes? Check. Dress shoes in workout bag for post-swim meeting? Check. Remembering his name was Scott, not Seth? Not so lucky on that one. Don't even get me started on the rambling explanation of Web 3.0 or the typo on the PowerPoint (communication stools, not tools). Thank goodness it was still in draft form and no one but a good friend had seen it yet.
Then there is the eating. The constant string of meals is exhausting. So many salads, so few french fries. May sound silly but there is a certain amount of stress and pressure involved with trying to eat only things that are good for you and not things you actually like.
So while my life is uneventful, it is filled with things that normally would have sent me straight to the latest mall for a shoe fix. I would have bought something, anything, to make me feel better about the fact that a potential client has yet to call me back (you said Monday, right?) or that I only did 45 minutes at the gym or that the cute guy who bought me a drink has yet to email (you said you would, right?).
I haven't though. I haven't even set foot in a mall or a retail clothing store in 30 days. I've done plenty of online window shopping, I've even put some things in my "cart" but I haven't moved to "check-out" and I haven't "completed a purchase".
Maybe I should be congratulating myself for making it this far? There were certainly enough people that didn't think I would make it three days, let alone 30. Yet, it has seemed fairly easy. Maybe it was the retail hangover from Christmas that made it so easy. Maybe it was the fact that the potential clients (did I mention they said they would call on Monday) haven't signed on the dotted line.
Probably it was some combination of both but I doubt that it will be this easy moving forward. Eleven months is a long-time; I have a birthday in that time. At some point, I will sign new clients. It will be Spring soon enough. Each of those things will tempt me, taunt me.
Until then, though, I'm going to relish that my only purchase in January (aside from groceries, gas, coffee, meals, that is) was that frickin' cork board that I never got around to taking back. Who knows, maybe it will turn out to be the favorite of my 12 Things? I doubt it but maybe?
****Oh, and since today is Oscar nomination day, here's the list of nominees. I'm very, very excited about nominations for District 9, Hurt Locker and Up. These were my favorite movies of the year.
