What do you do in Paris on a weekend, alone? Sound pathetic? Well, not really, given everything there is to do in this city. With the possible exception of trying to find someplace to dine where you won't get picked up (unless that's your thing), it is actually a wonderful city to spend a weekend out and about, even at night.
The Louvre, at night. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, the Louvre is open until 10 PM (the galleries start closing at 9:30ish). It is the best way to see the museum, especially if you're here for more than a day or two, because the crowds are minimal (see pic). There is no one pushing you out of the way to view the Mona Lisa; no mad rush to see Napoleon's apartments; and even the book shop is quiet and calm. It helps if you have a few opportunities to visit the museum (it's also a reduced price visit on W/F) so that you can check out the individual wings, one at a time, without rushing yourself.
Wine tasting. When in Paris (or France), it's time to taste some wine. I highly recommend O Chateau, a small operation that is dedicated to fun and not intimidating, at all, wine education. There is a small shop attached though they only sell the wines you taste, that evening. The sommeliers are enthusiastic and knowledgeable. For 50 euros, you can taste five grand cru wines and a champagne. It is a lovely way to spend a few hours on a Saturday night.
Dining alone. The one thing I hate, as a woman traveling alone, is eating alone. It isn't especially comfortable and so I tend to eat a fantastic lunch out (for some reason it is easier in the day time) and then make dinner at home. But on Saturday night, I decided to treat myself to the prix fixe menu at Fish la Boissonnerie. I've been here several times over the year and it is always good for a wonderful meal. Plus, while it is usually populated by the French, the owners are American and New Zealanders so they are much more tolerant of my halting French. After having a lovely Sancerre, sea bass with a lemon risotto, and a cheese plate for dessert, I was content, walked home and watched Vicky, Christina, Barcelona on DVD.
Sunday sunshine and Cafe de Flore. There is nothing original about loving Cafe de Flore but love it I do. Great people watching, fun waiters, and excellent coffee. This is the perfect place to read the Sunday editions of the Guardian and IHT.
